Joy of Tools
Does anyone know a word for the feeling you get when all of your tools are arrayed before you, in the places where your hands want to reach for them so that you can find them by feel without having to think about it?
The Germans probably have a word for that. Maybe the Japanese.
I have spent the past several weeks arranging tools by watching how I used them and disregarding my eyes and my thoughts. I noticed that I use them in clusters (maybe that is obvious, but it wasn’t to me). At some point I realized that since I’m left handed I like to turn to the left and find them (that wasn’t obvious either until I felt it repeatedly.)
It has been interesting to watch other parts of myself, closer to the intelligence of my hands, set up the studio for my hands. More direct routes to joy, for the hands…
